Lesson 2 of 5
Turning a vague goal into a number and a date
Whatever your version of financial freedom looks like, it can be converted into a specific number and a target date, the same way a smaller savings goal works -- just at a larger scale. If it's "cover my expenses without working," the number is your annual essential expenses multiplied by however many years of coverage feels right, or, for full financial independence, often 25x your annual expenses (a commonly used rule of thumb based on sustainable long-term withdrawal rates). If it's a smaller, nearer-term version -- like "have enough saved to take a 3-month career break" -- the number is simply 3 months of expenses, and the date is however soon you want to be able to do it. Once you have a number and a date, you can work backward to a monthly savings/investing rate the same way any goal works: (number minus current progress) divided by months remaining. If that monthly amount doesn't fit your current budget, the honest choices are the same as any goal -- extend the date, adjust the number, or find room in your budget -- not to leave it vague and hope it works out.
