Paycheck Planner
Financial Freedom

Lesson 1 of 5

What "financial freedom" actually means for you

"Financial freedom" gets used to mean retiring early, never worrying about money, working because you want to rather than because you have to, or simply not living paycheck to paycheck. None of these are wrong, but none of them are specific enough to build a plan around, either -- and a goal you can't plan around is a wish, not a plan. Before you can build toward financial freedom, it needs a personal, specific definition: Is it a dollar amount that lets you cover expenses without working? A date you want to reach it by? A specific lifestyle change, like dropping to part-time or switching to lower-stress work you'd take a pay cut for? All are valid, but they lead to very different plans. Spend time on this before moving to the next lesson, which turns whatever you land on into an actual number and date. A vague sense that "more money would fix this" tends to lead to more money and the same feeling -- a specific target is what actually resolves it.
